Animal Attendants are a core part of our team here at AWL NSW. Not only do they provide daily care and companionship, they play a transformative role in each animal’s journey, helping them heal, trust, and thrive while they’re with us.

This month, we’re excited to introduce you to Lauren, one of our incredible Animal Attendants and one of the newest faces on this season of The Dog House Australia!

Lauren & Angel

How long have you been working at AWL NSW?

I’ve been at AWL NSW just over a year now!

What inspired you to work with animals?

Growing up I was always surrounded by animals and have always had a massive interest in them. The fact they are so trusting and resilient even though they may not have had the greatest start to life is what inspired me the most to work in the industry.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day as an Animal Attendant can be very busy, sometimes messy but super rewarding. We feed the animals, clean their spaces and make sure everyone is happy and healthy. There’s lots of playtime, cuddles, walking and sometimes baths and meds. We help with adoptions and make sure to give each animal some extra loving.

Is there a particular animal at the shelter who’s stolen your heart? Tell us a bit about them.

Yes! Max is one of the dogs that pulls on my heart strings the most. Max is super quirky, funny and has some of the best facial expressions of all time. He’s a 6 year old kelpie x staffy and is unfortunately one of our long termers. He’s approaching nearly a year in shelter and still patiently waiting to find his forever home. I think Max would absolutely thrive in a home and whoever makes the decision to bring him home will be the luckiest family in the world.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the progress animals make whilst under our care. Whether that be working on their confidence, medical issues or even some basic everyday training. Every animal deserves a chance at life and to be loved no matter what state they come in.

What do you hope people take away when they visit or adopt from AWL NSW?

When people come into our shelter I hope they get the opportunity to see how much they are appreciated for helping a community of rescues that need it the most!

What has been your favourite part about working on the Dog House Australia?

Although it was a very daunting experience at first, my favourite part was having the opportunity to show everyone all the loving dogs that we have looking for their forever homes. We also had such success finding the right homes and giving these dogs a chance.
