Heartworm is transmitted via mosquitoes and infects the heart as well as associated major blood vessels. The prevalence of heartworm infection in dogs is significant in the Sydney region.
Treatment is expensive and not always successful. There is a range of heartworm preventatives available including tablets and spot-on treatments. These need to be given regularly every month to prevent infection.
An injection is also available for the prevention of Heartworm. The first injection is recommended from 3 months of age, then at 6 months of age and again at 15 months of age. After that, an annual injection is recommended for protection and prevention of Heartworm.
If your dog is over 3 months of age, it is recommended that a blood test is performed to ensure your puppy does not have heartworm, prior to starting a heartworm preventative.
