World Veterinary Day is an annual event that was created and established to promote and highlight the lifesaving work performed by veterinarians around the world. The day was proclaimed in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association, and it is celebrated on the last Saturday of April every year.
This year, there is a focus on appreciating the extraordinary efforts of veterinarians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whilst the world was literally shutting down, veterinarians in Australia remained unsure about what their future in the pandemic would be and a push was made to ensure their important work was recognised as an essential service.
As more and more people began to work from home, a rise in pet adoptions saw an increased need for veterinarians across the country to provide their vital services while adjusting to COVID-19 protocols. This often saw veterinary clinics work in ‘teams’ to help safeguard against the risk of the entire team being out of action should they be exposed to the virus or be required to self-isolate. An increased need for PPE became the norm, and clients now found themselves waiting outside in parking lots. Innovation and quick adaptation became necessary to meet the growing needs of veterinarians across the country and in reality, the increased demand put a great deal of additional pressure on an industry already struggling with a mental health crisis.
Throughout the pandemic, veterinarians continued to show up to work, putting their patients first. Their generosity and commitment deserve to be recognised and thanked. The Animal Welfare League NSW veterinary team is no exception to this, as they strived to help as many animals as they could during exceptional and extraordinary times.
So pandemic or no pandemic, Animal Welfare League NSW recognises our remarkable team for going the extra mile day after day despite the challenging times we may find ourselves in. Our veterinary team continues to visit some of the most vulnerable areas in the community to provide outreach programs and treat animals that may come through to Animal Welfare League NSW via our inspectorate.
